OSU Wexner Medical Center Offers Clinic To Help Prevent Patients From Falling
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has issued a press release about their multi-disciplinary clinic to help prevent falls that could cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death. According to the press release, falls are the leading cause of injury-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths for Ohioans age 65 and older, but in many cases are preventable. Patients that go to the clinic are assessed head-to-toe and are evaluated based on their history of falls, medical history and a physical exam that includes testing their gait and balance. The clinic will help give recommendations to patients if their home environment could be improved to help their physical limitations. If needed, some patients will be sent to outpatient physical therapy for exercises to strengthen certain muscles, increase their range of motion and improve their gait and endurance to lessen the risk of falls.
