Tap Water Nitrate Advisory for Central and Columbus, Ohio Areas
The Columbus Division of Water has issued a nitrate advisory to certain populations receiving water from the Dublin Road Water Plant. The affected area encompasses parts of West, Central, and Southwest Columbus as well as Grandview Heights, Grove City, Hilliard, Lincoln Village, Marble Cliff, Upper Arlington, Urbancrest, and Valleyview. The Columbus Division of Water recommended to not give tap water to infants that are under six months old or use this tap water to make infant formula, juice or baby cereal. Healthy adults and older children are able to ingest higher levels of nitrate, which is contained in many foods, including processed meats and lettuce. Boiling the tap water will actually make the problem worse because the nitrate levels become more concentrated, leading to an even greater increase of Nitrate levels in the water after boiling. Increased Nitrate levels in the water are often due to fertilizer and agricultural runoff. This nitrate advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
