Flu Update for Columbus and Central Ohio Areas

According to the Columbus Health Department, influenza-like illnesses are increasing and becoming more common in the Columbus and Central Ohio area, resulting in more hospitalizations.  There were 91 hospitalizations during a week in mid-December in our our area.  Hospitalizations are already five times what they were last year.  Public health officials are strongly recommending people to get the flu shot. “While we know the virus has drifted and the shot doesn’t provide full protection against the most common H3N2 virus, the flu vaccine can provide cross protection and help lessen the severity and duration of symptoms if you get sick,” says Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa Long.  “In addition to a flu shot, you also can reduce your chances of getting the flu by washing your hands, covering your cough and staying home if you are sick,” she adds.  If you get the Flu, Dr. Long recommends seeing their primary healthcare provider to see if treatment with Tamiflu is appropriate.  Tamiflu is an antiviral medication that works best when started during the first two days of flu symptoms.   For more information: http://columbus.gov/Templates/Detail.aspx?id=75741
