Listeria Update For The Columbus, Ohio Area

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams” website now says that they will be reopening in the near future. Last month, Jeni’s Ice Creams had to recall all of their ice creams, close down all 21 of their retail ice cream shops, and undergo a massive overhaul of their Columbus-area kitchen and safety rules because of a contamination involving Listeria Monocytogenes. A contaminated sample found by the Nebraska Health Department prompted all of the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams shops around the nation to close.

On May 6, 2015, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams’ website stated, “As we’ve previously stated, we found Listeria in our production kitchen. We can now say that we believe we located the smoking gun. Our swab testing found Listeria on the spout of one of our production machines. It is a machine we use to fill a portion of our pints. The machine was not used to fill buckets that we scoop from in our shops, but we are nonetheless continuing with our plan to dispose of all of those buckets.”

Jeni’s Ice Cream’s Website further stated, “Our entire kitchen team is at our headquarters this week receiving training on improved standard operating and sanitation procedures that go above and beyond the safety requirements of the FDA and Ohio Department of Agriculture.” No illnesses connected to Jeni’s Ice Cream have been reported as of this posting. Jeni’s website also explains that new measures will be in place to assure a greater degree of safety with the implementation of an aggressive environmental testing and sampling program. This program will consist of a regular swab-testing regime intended to completely eliminate Listeria. On May 12th, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams posted  a picture on their Facebook page of their new kitchen conveyor belt with a caption saying, “We plan to fire this baby up by the end of the week”, implying that ice cream production would begin very soon!
